Mount Gambier is a significant regional city of almost 30,000 people located on a major highway in the exact middle between Melbourne and Adelaide. It has a developed into a vibrant, family-friendly space, which also happens to be an affordable place to live - perfect for someone looking for the "tree-change" that still has a "metropolitan" way about it.

Mount Gambier Baptist Church is seeking a highly motivated leader to oversee and develop our children and youth ministries. We are a multi-ethnic, multi-generational and contemporary congregation, made up of almost 300 people. We have an amazing ministry team that is ready to help you flourish in your role, and ensure you and your family is looked after.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong sense of calling to this vital area of ministry, and will have experience in leadership within pastoral leadership teams. This person will be responsible through the senior pastor to the church fellowship for all of our 'Next Generation' ministries.

This is a paid role at 4 days per week (0.8 FTE), with the aim that it does become a full-time role in the future.

Role definition

  1. Oversee and develop children and youth ministries, developing discipleship strategies for young people from pre-school to the end of high school.
  2. Develop and support volunteer leaders in children and youth ministries
  3. Manage, coach, train, and resource the volunteer teams for these ministry groups
  4. Connect with the families of our children and youth
  5. Connect with the community through outreach/evangelism opportunities
  6. Work with the lead pastor and church leadership teams
  7. Build, lead and maintain teams for age appropriate ministries
  8. Liaise with other youth and children's ministry leaders in the region

Key competencies

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills with children, youth, and adults
  2. Demonstrated ability to build, lead, equip and encourage a group of volunteers
  3. Good communication skills both verbal and written
  4. A clear understanding of the Gospel and the call to discipleship
  5. Ability to communicate theological truths in ways children and youth can engage in and understand
  6. Ability to develop creative ways of encouraging participation and engagement in children and youth ministries
  7. A capacity to mentor youth and provide wise counsel
  8. Ability to provide pastoral care to the target age groups and their families.

Essential Criteria

  1. A living, growing, and active relationship with Jesus
  2. Christian character in keeping with the scriptural requirements for elders
  3. Agreement with MGBC values and vision
  4. Experience in children and youth ministries
  5. A significant portion of theological study completed (eg: a completed Diploma of Ministry, or perhaps midway through a BMin). Current, recent or soon-to-graduate students are welcome to apply.
