Associate Dean of Education

Morling College is the Baptist Theological College of New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory. In 2021, it merged with Vose Seminary, the Baptist Theological College of Western Australia and now operates across campuses in New South Wales and Western Australia. The College is a third-party provider of the Australian College of Theology for most of its theological awards and of the University of Divinity for Higher Degree Research. Morling College is also a Registered Institute of Higher Education Provider (HEP) offering biblically grounded, quality education and training in the areas of Education, Counselling, Chaplaincy & Spiritual Care, Professional Supervision and Theology. We are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual as an Associate Dean of Education. Reporting to the Dean of Education and working closely with other senior colleagues, you will contribute to the formation and equipping of students and the wider mission of Morling College through engagement and administration. You will be responsible for assisting with the operational management and day-to-day running of the courses in the Faculty of Education, ensuring it achieves quality education and educational governance standards in collaboration with the College representatives and bodies. The role includes requirements for teaching, participation in the life of the College, research/scholarship and/or academic professional development activities. It is important that you will also have been engaged in professional practice in your field of expertise.

The role is part-time, 4 days per week (0.8FTE) based at the Sydney, NSW Campus. Morling College offers a competitive salary above award rates with religious practitioner's exempt benefits for this position. There can be flexibility in the distribution of hours, as required in the academic timetable. During peak periods, additional hours may be necessary and attendance at relevant meetings may occur outside of business hours.

The approximate proportions of the role allocated to its primary components across a four-year period (assuming a semester’s worth of study leave) are as follows:

• 25% teaching and related activities
• 25% research/scholarship and/or academic professional development
• 50% administration, engagement, student care and general professional development

Key Responsibilities

1. Management

• Providing leadership and administration to the Faculty of Education. Responsible for majority of the management of the faculty, in association with the Faculty Administrator

2. Preparation and Teaching of Classes

• As determined by the College, normally within the field of Education
• Preparing content of lectures and learning materials for online and/or on-campus delivery
• Teaching students in a way which enables them to meet their academic and ministry formation objectives

3. Research, Writing, Scholarship and/or Academic Professional Development Activity

• Ongoing active involvement in research, writing and scholarship activities and/or academic professional development activities relevant to field of expertise in accordance with Morling College Policy

4. Representation and Engagement with Students and Key Stakeholders

• The College operates on an “open door policy” that encourages interaction between students and faculty
• Course advising, appropriate pastoral care of existing students
• Interviewing future students and answering questions in their application process
• Representing the College throughout the Baptist denomination and beyond, through deputation and other speaking engagements
• Representing the College on bodies/committees. Where such duties are unusually heavy, reductions to teaching load may be granted

5. Participation in the Life of the College

It is expected that the Associate Dean will be part of the College community and will be involved in the life of the College across all campuses. This will include:

• Attendance at staff team meetings
• Attendance at Chapel services, including preaching or leading as required
• Involvement in College events and lunchtimes with staff and students

It should be noted that, while detailed, this position description is not exhaustive, the Principal and the Dean of Education may, at their discretion and in consultation, vary the responsibilities as required.

Qualifications and Experience

• Academic Qualifications to teach at required AQF levels
• Master level qualification in Education
• Experience in teaching within a higher education institution

Skills, Character and Qualities

• Demonstrated Christian character and active involvement in a local evangelical church
• Alignment of personal values, beliefs and practices with the mission and Christian ethos of Morling College
• Agreement with Morling College's Statement of Beliefs and Community Code (with any reservations clearly stated and explained at interview)
• Willingness to embrace a cultural of shared evangelical conviction and gracious, respectful disagreement on other matters
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong organisational skills and abilities

Desirable Attributes

Qualifications and Experience

• Formal academic qualifications in Theology, Biblical Studies or a related discipline, at undergraduate or postgraduate level

• A minimum of 7 years’ relevant and current professional experience in Education with at least 3 of those years being at a senior level
• Experience in management within a higher education institution
